Program Note
“The story ends with a broken dream, but not with the end of hope. And it’s like that because the daily struggle of Beto, like that of all the poor around the world, is a daily task that has to be carried out with conviction and courage… some day, the culture and traditions in Melo will no longer exist. They’ll change or disappear. We wanted to tell their stories before the inevitable happens.” ? Enrique Fernandez Petty smuggler Beto is convinced he’s found a way to strike it rich on the back of the Pope John Paul’s visit to Melo. He’ll let everyone else make money off food, drink, and trinkets: he’ll build The Pope’s Toilet. Beto’s idea frustrates both his wife and daughter, but never does he let his dream waver. El Bano del Papa is a poignant, funny story of human dignity and small town solidarity both moving and empathetic.
