Program Note
The Cannes Film Festival celebrated 60 years in 2007, and to mark the occasion, 35 of the world’s most prominent, innovative, and respected filmmakers created a three-minute film to relay how he or she feels about the cinema right now. Simple as that may seem, the films are as diverse as the filmmakers themselves. Cimino, Coen, Moretti, Dardenne, Kaurismaki, Zhang, Polanski, Assayas, and Kiarostami are among the scroll, and the results are surprising, enlightening, moving, and provocative. Among the themes wending their way through the films: the loss of the theater as a place for shared experiences, and the impact of the rise of technology. These are filmmakers that continually demand the audience rethink the power and place of cinema, and this project is no different.
