“To tell the truth, she is not your real mother.” The secret revealed by the boyfriend of Dada’s mother is more abrupt than striking. With this new knowledge, Dada immediately decides to leave home. Jao, who has been carrying a torch for Dada for a long time, joins her on the journey to find her real mother. Yuan Zhang, a front running sixth generation director from China starts his film with the heroine searching for her real mother. But the motive for this almost seems to be a MacGuffin since Dada had to escape from her mother’s teasing lover anyway. Instead, the film focuses on expressing and visualizing the emotional interchange of the two on the journey. Yuan Zhang succeeds at this by presenting two dances by Dada and one by Jao. These three dances are visualized to console, to rejoice, and to confess one’s love. We can experience the director′s warm viewpoint as he portrays the wavering, lonesome adolescent. (KANG Sowon)
