Set in Keelung, Darkness and Light is a winding tale with multiple characters and storylines. The action pivots on a love triangle involving the teenaged Kang-yi, back from Taipei on summer vacation, Ah Lim (daughter of a local gangster) and the boy they are both are fixated on, Ah Ping, just expelled from military college. For several years, I have considered that to turn cinema which is fake, i.e., fiction, into cinema as truth requires the ceaseless efforts of the filmmaker. For that reason, I strived not to focus on fictional parts in order to make “less fictional truth” as far as I could. The performances of actor and actress, and the image were transformed into something realistic. Although conservative cinema-technicians were frequently full of complaints, such as we weren’t following the rules of lighting, I have never assented to such methods. After viewing the scene where main characters come back home from holiday near the end of Darkness and Light, even the actor and actress were surprised at the realistic look of the scene, just as if it were a real family′s day. It is my taste as well as my habit to aspire towards reality. (Chang Tso-chi)
