Program Note
Sixty-five-year-old Soyeong sells her body to old men in the Jongro area. She is popular among the other Bacchus ladies when her reputation as a woman who is ”fatally good at sex” goes viral among the old men. She lives with her transgender landlady and a disabled man, and she takes in a suddenly orphaned boy, whose mother was arrested. She used to work as a foreigner’s whore who barely made ends meet, but she can’t ignore people in wretched conditions. She is asked to kill one of her customers (himself), and suffering a stroke after being torn between guilt and sympathy, she genuinely kills him. She turns from a woman who is fatally good at it into a woman who killed. In the lead role, Yoon Yeojeong portrays the old lady’s dignity in maintaining a noble spirit despite her occupation. The Bacchus Lady is a film about someone who could be a role model for her sympathy for others, and her bravery against prejudice, although she does less than dignified work for a living.
Director
E J-yong
After his remarkable debut with The Affair (1998), E quickly became recognized as a meticulous director, a talent that he utilizes in Asako in Ruby Shoes (2000), Untold Scandal (2003), and Dasepo Naughty Girls (2006). He attempted to redefine the boundary between reality and fiction through Actresses (2009) and further explored this theme in Behind the Camera (2013).
