Program Note
J is delaying the start of her puberty because she is concerned about her gender. However, it’s time to make a decision. J’s sister Lauren and her boyfriend Araz are also going through an unstable period and confronting their own decisions. The movie keeps them in tune with J’s time, describing the pressure J suffers in a mature manner. Growth is the time period that causes confusion, and though we sometimes want to stop it, it keeps approaching us. While we greet it, we have someone who stands by us. For an upcoming poetry reading, J keeps reciting, “I don’t know my age.” The most amazing charm of this movie is that the delayed time is engaged with the issue of gender selection. Most people do not bother with gender selection, taking it for granted. However, J’s time, delayed moments of growth, flows with the anxiety about the future and the wisdom to let it go, but it also delivers sharp and serious messages that a gender identity is not a thing decided naturally.
