Program Note
Photographer Paz is a free spirit, meeting new friends and experiencing new things. She falls in love with former war correspondent César, and becomes pregnant. However, being a mom leaves Paz hollow. Unable to cope with feeling cooped up, Paz leaves César and the child. At the beginning of the film, we see a man and a woman in passionate love in the great outdoors. The sensual editing crisscrosses image and dialogue, creating a more dreamlike atmosphere. Hence the reality they soon face seems all the duller, and the woman who gives birth to a baby in the city is depleted of life. The director shows the wobbly relationship after the beautiful loving period is over, first from the woman’s perspective, then from the man’s. Where the young mother’s depression dominated the first half of the film, the man’s actions become the film’s focus after she leaves. This is Mélanie Laurent’s third feature, in which the shark from the deep sea will be long remembered as a desire for nature away from the cityscape. (RHEE Souewon)
