Katja lives with her six-year-old son, Rocco, and her husband, Nuri, who gives consultations to Turks and Kurdish immigrants settled in Germany. When she loses her husband and son in a bomb attack, she becomes a plaintiff and a witness in a court battle against neo-Nazis. In the Fade, from world renowned director Fatih Akin, is based on actual attacks on Turkish communities by right wing extremists in Germany between 2000 and 2007. Katja and Nuri’s wedding in prison is full of joy, energy and life, but it is the only bright moment in this film. Following this, the screen is tormented with the heartbreaking despair and meaningless existence of a woman who’s lost her husband and son. With Diane Kruger playing Katja, the driving force of the story, the film superbly unfolds the delicate process of revealing prime terror suspects, truth debates and thrilling courtroom drama, putting justice itself into question. Her impassioned performance peaks at the protagonist’s inevitable decision. Kruger won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival 2017 for this outstanding performance. (RHEE Souewon)
