<b>Weekend Plot</b> is the second feature film by Zhang Ming, who adopted modern methods in his last film <b>In Expectation</b> by developing penetrating psychological depictions. Seven close friends gather and depart on a trip and upon arrival they find a note with the words "I will love you until death" which begets wild speculations. This film is a window onto the love lives of modern Chinese. The remains of lovers in a cave was considered, at the time the note was written, as a fulfillment of their willingness to die if death would make their love permanent. But in the contemporary world this belief in love until death has gone out of fashion and is ridiculed. As in his last film, Zhang Ming employs his camera in moderation; grotesque props and sound effects lead the viewer into a psychological mystery tunnel but the mystery pops when everyone realizes the note was concocted by one of the friends as a prank.
