Program Note
Thana built Garden Square, Bangkok’s landmark of the 1990s. The building’s young owner plans to demolish it and replace it with a modern one. Facing a crisis, Thana feels tired of urban life. One day, he finds his childhood pet elephant, Pop Aye, on a busy street and with the elephant, he sets out on a long, unpredictable journey to his hometown. This road movie is a story of a wayfarer who faces life and death and meets other lives of pain and joy. Homeless hippie Dee feels his death at hand. Transgender woman Jenny sings at a bar. Thana’s encounters with them are filled with loneliness, alienation and contradiction that confronts us every day. Meanwhile, the film’s surreal scenes add some shining fantasy to their lives. Thana finally reaches his hometown but the situation he faces there shatters his nostalgia. Nevertheless, the film still tells us gently that life is still there. (HONG Soin)
