Program Note
A film about a man named Pepe in the small, chaotic and vibrant southern Indian city of Angamaly. Since his school days, Pepe has yearned for a life in a powerful gang, making minor trouble such as smoking and drinking. Either by good luck or by being good in school, he gets admission to a college. Soon he organizes a gang, ambitiously plays the role of trouble shooter, and starts dating the girl he’s wanted to for a long time. However, it only takes one of his gang members getting stabbed and killed for him to realize that death is always nearby. With the rest of the gang, he starts the pork business they had previously hesitated on. The business is successful so Pepe’s life becomes busy with festivals, marriage, movies, beer and romance. However, their success invites jealousy from others and even bigger crises. Lijo Jose Pellissery proved his directorial skills in the thriller genre in his previous works. Angamaly Diaries satisfies both commercial and artistic values. The last scene depicting the coming crisis during the festival will provide a powerful cinematic experience. (PARK Sungho)
