Program Note
The film’s title alone tells us that it will be a story of looking for Johnny. However, this title is almost symbolic. Although the name “Johnny” does appear in the film—it is mentioned when someone dials a wrong number—no actual character exists. Instead, the title refers to an act of “looking” for something. The film’s characters look carefree, but each of them has a heart-breaking story to tell. After her divorce, yoga instructor Hsu lives away from her daughter. Repairman Feng went through adolescence full of confusion after his parents separated when he was a child. It is not easy to fix broken family relationships, which is comparable to “looking for Johnny” without any information. What fills such a hole is a chance encounter, like a train passing between two different railroad tracks. A scene with this meaning is also found in Café Lumière (2003) directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Missing Johnny, on which Hou is a producer, is Huang Xi’s debut feature. (HER Namwoong)
