Program Note
Pickle is a security guard in a factory making bronze statues of Buddha. He is a poor old bachelor living with his widow mother. His best friend, Belly Button, is a junk dealer. At night, in the security office, Pickle and Belly Button glance through porn magazines Belly Button has collected, and this is the utmost pleasure for Pickle. One day, when the TV in the security office is broken, Belly Button attempts to peep at the black box in Kevin’s car, Pickle’s boss. Addicted to peeping at it, they witness a scene in which Kevin kills a woman, puts the body in a huge Buddha statue and seals it up. After that day, their lives totally change. The gray tone of the black and white screen depicts the grim reality of the lower class, whereas the colorful night in the black box reveals the capitalist hierarchical culture in Taiwan. This is the first feature film by Huang Hsin-Yao, the Taiwanese documentary director. This new film drew much attention in film circles for its experimental forms and pungent sarcasm. (KANG Naeyoung)
