Program Note
When he was at university in Tehran, Reza shouted audaciously “In this country, there are only two ways of life: either you oppress people or be oppressed yourself!” While one of his peers continued to raise his voice like this and was sentenced to six years in prison for breaching National Security and inciting anti-establishment thinking, Reza lives in a small town in the North of Iran, keeping goldfish. Reza wanted a quiet life after giving up both a life of oppression and a life of being oppressed, but what he found was a tyrannical company wanting to rule local society. He gets embroiled in a power struggle and when he resists, his family is destroyed and Reza finds himself at a crossroads. On giving up his belief, all the problems are solved; it was his belief that turned everything sour. Now, society is obsessed with making him the next mayor and CEO of the company. A Man of Integrity reveals the naked face of an ugly society controlled by power—an extremely topical notion. (PARK Jin-hee)
