Giovanna is a social worker who runs a local community center, La Masseria, for disadvantaged children. Her good intentions are called into question when she offers the family of a criminal a place to stay. The camera first shows a building with a large painting on the wall, then children in the front yard. The shaky, documentary styled camerawork follows the children, who ended up there for different reasons, and Giovanna, their caregiver and the head of the center. It is a place where people try to find hope in solidarity and mutual trust in a region dominated by the Camorra and riddled with violence. Giovanna is at the forefront of standing up against the vicious cycle of passing down violence from generation to generation. Although “intruders” are welcomed by no one, she refuses to compromise her values under any circumstances, reflecting on the fine line between tolerance and intolerance.
