Program Note
Having just returned from his ministry in Africa, Father Giuseppe requests to be appointed to a village near Naples. People living there are suffering from the Camorra’s illegal industrial waste disposal. He wants to prove that he is Father Don Antonio’s rightful successor and purify the village. Equilibrium is a story about a Catholic priest’s lonely but relentless fight against the Camorra, a crime organization based in Naples, Italy. The reality in which villagers are suffering from cancers and dying because of toxic waste is shocking and unbelievable. The camera continues to follow Father Giuseppe as he travels throughout the village to solve the problem despite intimidation. The movements are busy, but the editing takes its time. Various scenes are shot in swaying plan-séquence, adding a sense of realism. Vincenzo Marra focuses on the conspiracy between organized crime and religion, and the unsolved issue of toxic waste, in his latest film. It comes to Busan International Film Festival after having screened at Venice Days during the Venice International Film Festival. (RHEE Souewon)
