Program Note
Milton, Italian partisan fighter, discovers the woman he loves could have been in love with a mutual friend. On hearing the news his friend was captured by fascists, his jealousy now comes with a sense of justice, but he wants to know the whole truth. As the film begins, two men appear in dense fog and the camera focuses in on one of them. He can’t forget the memories of his beloved woman and moves only to dismiss his suspicions on the battlefield, where lives are risked and the fires of war cascade over them. With a soundtrack of beautiful yet enigmatic music and the visual impact of the thick fog, private affair surpassing public justice reveals itself as the essence of the film. A fixed shot of a girl standing up among corpses, or a long shot focusing on people zigzagging on the still screen is in line with the early films of the Taviani brothers, worldclass masters in brilliantly depicting the chaos of history. Italian actor Luca Marinelli’s performance is worth noting. (RHEE Souewon)
