Program Note
Gaspar is a director who is preparing his film, making tests, and recruiting for small roles and extras. Meanwhile, Jean, his producer, has great difficulty raising the capital to run his business. Eurydice, his wife, has always dreamt of becoming an actress, and Jean wants to make her dream come true by recruiting her for Gaspar’s film. And the tension between Jean and Gaspar rises. Rise and Fall of Small Film Company is the true embodiment of Godard’s films and the epitome of his filmmaking style: self-reflexivity, TV screens, overlapping dialogues superimposition, intertitles, characters who stare at the camera, citations of classical films, and crime fictions of “Série noire.” Unlike other films by Godard, Rise and Fall of Small Film Company is an easy to understand, full of satire and wit. Although this work was completed in the 1980s, it has never been released in movie theaters till this year. You can also see a young Jean-Pierre Léaud, icon of the Nouvelle Vague, in this film.
