In 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed and the Cold War era came to an end, Sergei had to stay in the Mir space station, which Russia operates, and run in Earth orbit sixteen times a day. To Sergio, a philosophy professor specializing in Marxism and enjoying amateur radio communication in Havana, this world changing event means nothing but an uncertain future. One day, the two happen to start radio communications and Sergei asks Sergio to help him come back to Earth. Sergio contacts his friend in New York who has connections to NASA in an attempt to help, which only puts him under unexpected surveillance. The latest film by leading Cuban director Ernesto Daranas, Sergio & Sergei is a comedy that embraces political satire, telling the unique story of two men who establish communication between the Earth and the universe. Following the director’s previous work Behavior which was introduced in the 2014 Busan International Film Festival, the old streets and living quarters of Havana capture our attention as much as the characters do in this film.
