Coming from the slums of São Paulo, Clara begins to work as a nanny and housekeeper for the wealthy, unwed mother Ana. Ana is a first skeptical of Clara as a nanny, but becomes more and more dependent and soon there is a tension growing between them. Then on a full moon’s night, Clara discovers the secret of Ana’s pregnancy, and not too long after that, Ana’s baby is born prematurely. Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas partner again as director and writer 6 years after their debut film, Hard Labor , which was screened at the Un Certain Regard during the Cannes Film Festival. Compared to their first film, which masterfully interlaced a thriller with sociological observations, Good Manners more actively incorporates genre film aesthetics. Many social values—social class and race, the gap between the rich and the poor, desire and responsibility—are encrusted throughout the film. It is no exaggeration to say this film is at the forefront of South American auteur genre film. It won the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival. (Jin PARK)
