Program Note
Shopping mall security guard Abdelkader and housemaid Malika are newlyweds. Despite their financial difficulties, their love for each other and dreams for the future are big. But one day, Abdelkader experiences a humiliating incident at work that turns their lives upside down. This drama contrasts a poor but deeply in love young couple with the rich but inhumane and hypocritical upper class. The husband suffers violence only because he is part of the powerless working class, and the corrupt law and government tramples on the weak as though only natural. The form of the film also draws on this contrast. Frames for example emphasize the difference between a big family dining together around a table in a small but cozy room, with a couple living in a fancy mansion with many rooms but no communication. The scenes about people who are weak but full of humanity are awash with warmth and wit, especially the friendship depicted by the button incident. This film is a powerful criticism about injustice and discrimination in Morocco. (RHEE Souewon)
