Program Note
On Australia’s most controversial national holiday, the lives of three Australians from diverse cultural backgrounds will collide, illuminating the contemporary issues of racial tension and national identity that simmer beneath the surface of modern Australia. All three are forced to rethink what he or she stands for—and what being Australian truly means—and each must make a profound sacrifice to bring about meaningful change. These three stories will interweave and intersect as they heat up and accelerate, until they reach their climaxes on that hot, contentious, enigmatic day on the calendar: Australia Day. Directed by Kriv Stenders, the director of one of Australia’s biggest local hits of all time, Red Dog, as well as the international hit Kill Me Three Times, Australia Day is a passionate, provocative, and well thought out drama dealing with social issues that Australia is facing now.
