Program Note
The newest movie by Anurag Kashyap, a director who has come to represent India by building a creative cinema world that swings back and forth between Bollywood and independent films. While following the characteristic splendor and storyline of Indian movies, Kashyap adds his own color to the movies. This time, he follows the process where a boxer from the lower class challenges the rampant corruption, clan system, drug use, and religious lunacy in India. Talented boxer Shravan loves a girl from the upper class. Since he has nothing, he tries to win her heart by gaining a championship. However, the girl’s uncle is Shravan’s boss, who gives Shravan a hard time because he is a big shot in the boxing community. He torments Shravan greatly and Shravan struggles to overcome adversity with his bare hands, a typical formula sports movies follow. Since wrestling and other sports movies are booming in India, we can focus on what kind of a new sports movie Kashyap presents. Also, it’s interesting to compare this movie with other boxing movies in the genre genealogy. (KIM Young-woo)
