In 1989, events in Tiananmen Square shook the whole world. After that historic event, the lives of those who participated changed forever. What happened to them afterwards? The director, who as a college student participated in the events, tries to answer this question with <b>Conjugation</b>. For Guo Song and his girlfriend, who both just graduated from college, the winter of 1989 is their coldest yet. The passion and hope that they felt in Tiananmen Square have now turned to despair and disillusionment. Guo Song and his friends seek a normal life, but they can′t seem to settle anywhere. The government officials are busy preparing for the 1990 Beijing Asian Games, but Guo Song and his friends drink their lives away, mourning the disappearance of their friend. The marches and the shouts, to which they devoted their youth, in the summer of ′89, have long disappeared. Instead the film grimly shows us the empty space left in their lives. Disillusionment, helplessness and quiet fury are what fill this void. After 10 years, China acquired a self-portrait from the Tiananmen generation. And the world acquired a portrait of youth filled with anxiety and despair. (Kwon Yong-Min)
