On the last day of her life， Antonia， now in her late 80s， casts herself back to when she and her daughter， Danielle， returned to the village she had left before World War II to see her mother， Allegona， on her death bed. Antonia and Danielle stride through town. Nothing has changed except for a piece of griffiti stating " Welkom to Our Liberators" meant for the American armies. Perhaps an enigmatic sign of fate， Antonia decides to stay. In the process， she creates a welcome table for all the odd ducks of the Netherlands who don" t， or won" t， fit into the roles of harsh tradition.
