All in the name and for the grace of god. <b>Maya</b> began with newspaper reports on this tragic event. Maya is a 12-year-old girl. She lives with her 11-year-old brother, Sonjay, under the warm care of her stepparents. One day Maya begins her period and her stepparents dedicate her to the monks. Then the monks deflower Maya for the grace of god. That was the region? local custom. Singh avoids falling into the trap of sensationalism. Instead, the director emphasizes the pure world of Maya and Sonjay. He maintains that the pureness of children can see the truth far better than adults. Rather than simply expressing rage, he makes the audience quietly seek the truth behind the tragedy.
