Program Note
Lagarista, transporting film reels between theaters by bike, is still prevalent in the Philippines. Gregory works the Lagarista, while taking care of his grandfather ailing from Alzheimer’s. He hangs out with projectionist, Jimmy; theater billboard painter, Joaquin and his nephew, Elmo; once a minor part actor, Osang and other friends who are more or less involved in the cinema. They all carry their own memories of the cinema. As Gregory falls in love with prostitute, Anna, he gradually enters adulthood. The growing numbers of multiplexes drive Lagaristas and projectionist out of work and subsequently, Gregory and Anna end up in sex movies.
The memories that Gregory and his friends have of the cinema are mostly beautiful. But as modernization takes place, it loses its human touch and collapses into a defiled means of generating profit. Through the death of Gregory′s grandfather, whose memories of the days when film was still pure accompanies his mortality, the filmmaker seems to be lamenting these changing times. (Kim Ji-Seok)
