Perhaps conflict between a mother and her daughter-in-law is the last exit for problems concerning women than simply being an issue of personality because victims tend to hurt each other. Female filmmaker Aparna Sen attempts to heal the pain with feminine sensibility and warmth. Paromita is an elite woman with a master′s degree, yet she chooses a traditional path. But her marriage to a self-centered oppressive husband is far from happy. Furthermore, her child is born physically impaired. As her husband blames her for every single problem they have, she becomes more and more impoverished. The only person who seems to understand is her mother-in-law, Sanaka who has endured traditional Hindu values while caring for her mentally troubled daughter for years. The two comfort each other as friends and comrades. However, when her child dies, Paromita decides to divorce her husband and start over. Sanaka resents Paromita for leaving, but it is the remarried Paromita who returns to take care of the ill Sanaka.
