The season of guavas ripening, Hoa attempts to climb over the fence of a big house every time he has the opportunity. This house is actually the place where Hoa grew up and where his growth stopped after falling from a guava tree during an attempt to pick the fruit. Now he is a middle-aged man taken care of by his married sister. The house of Hoa′s childhood has been sold to another person, who cuts down the tree after sending Hoa who cannot remember anything from that time anymore off to the mental institute. Through the painful history of the main character of this film, Dang Nhat Minh faces the changes that has occurred in post-colonial Vietnam which has become too preoccupied with following the capitalist model. The guava tree, which represents the last fifty years, is ruthlessly cut down when this is ordered by a bureaucrat despite the pleas of the bureaucrats daughter who feels compassion for Hoa. Deprived of his childhood memories, lying in despair at the mental institute, the only glimpse of hope to him is the bag of guavas his friend, Hue brings. (Ancha Flubacher Rhim)
