Program Note
Letters from an unknown place can bring joy. Women′s Paradise from Uzbekistan is truly a delightful experience full of exotic sensibility and human warmth. The main character is college professor and witer, Olim. He is currently separated from his wife after committing adultery. To make matters worse, his friend who is dying of a mysterious disease, assigns Olim to tutor his wife. Confused, he refuses at first, but he eventually sets out on a journey to find Zebo, his friend’s wife. The film, which maintained a realistic and humorous tone, gradually departs from reality.
During his journey, Olim discovers a women’s paradise where his lover, female pupil and wife are happily living together. Could this truly be a women′s paradise or just the projection of a male fantasy? This film presents magical realism as the line between reality and fantasy are broken and then brought back to place again. Olim′s journey is a process of confirming what femininity is all
about and furthermore exploring the hidden self. Likewise, when Olim returns to reality, it seems as though he had been standing in the same place, when to the audience, he had a long detour.
