Program Note
Based on true historical facts when, in October 1965, Indonesia, seven generals were assassinated. The government claimed that it was committed by communists and issued a harsh clamp down. The number of victims who were unfairly publicly executed, without any legitimate trial, numbered more than 500 thousand and some argue are more than 2 million. However this tragedy was never officially brought to public attention until president Suharto′s resignation.
Through the filmic recreation of such deplorable human rights violations, filmmaker Garin Nugroho brings out the emotions and sentiments of the survivors. A Poet follows Ibrahim Kadir, the indigenous poet unjustly imprisoned and released, and his memory that illustrates the heart of indonesia′s oral literature, Didong. Through the poet′s testimonies and the rhythm of Didong. A Poet restores the sad history from behind the prison walls for 30 years to the popular memories with a voice so bittersweet that it will reverberate through time. (Kwon Yong-Min)
