Program Note
In twenty film productions Sven Nykvist worked with Ingmar Bergman. Together they were pioneers in the art of sculpting with light. Twice Sven Nykvist won the greatest award of them all - the Oscar for Best Cinematography for Cries and Whispers(1973) and Fanny and Alexander(1981), both directed by Bergman. Simplicity is the hallmark of Sven′s work. He often quotes, “less is more”, meaning specifically that fewer lights gives you more true-to-life lighting. Working with other great names in the industry over the past half century, Sven Nykvist represents a chapter in the history of the art of filmmaking. But his life successes were counterbalanced by hard losses. His marriage to the beautiful Ulla could not compete with Sven′s creative obssession, and his younger son Johan committed suicide while Sven was in the US shooting Pretty Baby. Light Keeps Me Company, by his own son, allows us to look at Nykvist′s life and work via interviews with great names in the world film industry and through his own words.
