Program Note
Five years after Cyclo, Tran Anh Hung presents his latest feature, set in the city of Hanoi. Twenty three year old Lien lives with her older brother, an actor, while working at her older sister, Suong′s store. Suong′s husband, Quoc is a photographer whose job demands frequent traveling, and her second sister, Khanh′s husband writes a book at home. The peaceful images of the three sisters preparing a meal for the anniversary of their mother′s death suggest that all′s well, but their relationships are rupturing underneath. Lien has no qualms about announcing her desire to marry someone like her older brother. Her first sister′s marriage is in hot water with each having a lover of their own. So it is that each family members′s secrets are revealed slowly as if in a summer daze. The sensuous visuals and objective construction of characters unique to Tran Anh Hung′s world of film, elaborately captures the pushes and pulls of each relationship. This film introduces a more profound gaze by the filmmaker who has designed an Asian space where the global and the local meet. (Kwon Yong-Min)
