Program Note
Edward Yang brings us a thoughtful observation on the lives of diverse generations from young boy to a full-aged father and head of a family, with detailed sincerity. Computer executive Nu jian jumps into a heated competition to save his company and meets his ex-lover in the process. His Min-Min agonizes over her mother who had collapsed into a coma, his teenaged daughter, Ting-Ting, and his young son, Yan Yang are either beginning a relationship or opening their eyes to the opposite sex. The sense of alienation each member of the family feels is strangely invoked by the matriarch′s coma. The doctor instructs them to talk to the old lady in case she recovers consciousness again and with this, each take turns doing this only to find out that they do have much to say. They begin to look back on themselves. Through this film, Yang stresses that regardless of generations, the way people perceive life is pretty much the same. By starting the film with a wedding and ending it with a funeral represents Yang′s take on life as a ′circle.′ (Kim Ji-Seok)
