Program Note
In a Chinese remote village untouched by war. Ma Dasan gets a visit from a mysterious stranger, who identifies himself only as "Me,” menaces the terrified him and leaves in his care two prisoners until he comes back. The prisoners turn out to be Japanese soldier Hanaya and his Chinese translator. Six months pass without any sign of “Me.” After Hanaya tries to attract the attention of Japanese soldiers, the villagers decide to get rid of the prisoners. Dasan, however, hides them in a cavity in the Great Wall. As food becomes short, the village council decides to return them to the Japanese army and demand grains in return. Giving the more than the original order, Captain Sakatsuka throws a feast for the villagers, and all goes well until the captain suspects that an ambush is being planned. Suddenly, the paranoid commander orders a massacre. Many die in an outbreak of hysterical violence. Hanaya is about to commit ′Harikiri′ but the news of Emperor′s surrender stops him. In the postwar world, Dasan breaks into the local camp for Japanese prisoners and kills several men before he is arrested. He is sentenced to death. Captain Sakatsuka is ordered to behead him, with Hanaya as his second... (production notes)

JIANG Wen
Born in 1963 in Guizhou Province, Jiang Wen graduated from the Central Drama Academy and was assigned to the China Youth Theatre as an actor. With his appearances as the lead in films like Hibiscus Town(1986), Red Sorghum(1987), and Black Snow(1989), he became one of China‘s most celebrated actors. He made his directorial debut with In the Heat of the Sun(1994). Devils on the Doorstep is his second feature film.
