Program Note
When the filmmaker was surveying the streets of Mongkok to shoot Little Cheung, the last part of Fruit Chan′s ′Trilogy of Hong Kong Handover,′ he came across a prostitute from the mainland. His unsuccessful attempt to insert her story into Little Cheung eventually gave birth to this next film. The back streets of Mongkok is a place stricken by poverty, prostitution and gambling. The young dishwasher girl, Fan, her family and prostitute, Yin are all illegal immigrants. Fan and Yin, who don′t seem to have anything in common, become close by chance, but in the end, Yin fulfills her longtime dream of earning enough money to return home. The lives of the dishwasher and the prostitute represents the other side of Hong Kong undergoing transition. However, the filmmaker does not attempt to make any single conclusion. This structure of the film is more simplistic of contemporary Hong Kong. (Kim Ji-Seok)
