Program Note
Friendly Persuasion: Iranian Cinema after the Revolution is a documentary that presents itself as a research paper on the history, industry and aesthetics of Iranian filmmaking. What is the secret to Iranian cinema′s uniqueness that has taken major film festivals and world audiences by storm? The interviews with 12 filmmakers spanning three generations will transform your curiosity into embarrassment, since you come to know that ironically there have been more shadows than lights in the success of the Iranian cinema. As several keywords of Iranian cinema, such as censorship and rating issues, representation of women, and the cinema of children become the sub-title of each chapter for this research, the film clips and interviews of directors become the rich and deep content of the research. The film, which seems to be simple at first sight, shows lranian cinema in detail through the interviews, which sometimes collide, but eventually integrate. And the conclusion is that to make films in Iran is a form of resistance in itself. And the message is that this resistance is slowly working as Iranian society becomes ever less repressive. That′s why the title Friendly Persuasion is given. (Kang So-Won)
