Program Note
A portrait of the world-renowned filmmaker, Satyajit Ray (1921-1992), hailed as the god of the Indian cinema. Ray was born in Calcutta in 1921, and raised in an atmosphere that was both artistic and intellectual. After studying economics and art in the university, he drew numerous posters and illustrations while working in an advertising agency. After leading the New Cinema Movement with his formation of the Calcutta Film Society in 1947, Ray directed 25 films from his first, Pather Panchali, to his last, Agantuk. Relying on abundant materials, the documentary, Ray offers the audience the chance to look at Ray′s life from his birth to the last interview in his hospital ward and to hear his music, look at his numerous paintings and his films.
Director Goutam Ghose pays tribute to this master as he interweaves a collection of Ray′s life, music, artwork and films with the utmost respect and remembrance. Ghose also, like Ray, is one of the directors representing Bengali cinema and his tribute to the one who paved the way that he is going now is special and unique. (Yu Hyun-Mi)

Goutam Ghose was born in Calcutta in 1950 and worked in theatre and as a photojournalist. Apart from documentaries, he has made several features in Hindi, Bengali and Telegu. His films included Mother Land(1979), The Crossing(1984) and The Voyage Beyond(1987)
