Program Note
Based on the original story by Zaxidawa, this film is set in Tibet and spans 50 years of love and hate between one beautiful woman, who represents motherhood, and three men who each represent authority, courage and intelligence. In 1950, there lives a beautiful girl with an angelic voice, Yixi Zhuoma, in a remote village in Tibet. Jiacu, a wandering trader, has a crush on her at the first sight, so he kidnaps and marries her. However, their married life isn′t happy. Jiacu′s vagrant habits and poverty forces Yixi to work at Gongsa′s as a nanny and gives a birth to a son with him. As Jiacuo finds this out, he takes their daughter away with him, and Gongsa takes the son. However, Jiacuo spends his days drinking so Yixi takes care of him again. Then decades pass. As Jiacuo faces his death, he, Yixí, Gongsa, and Yixi′s childhood friend, monk Songqiu, meet and reconcile. It is a melodrama, but, at the same time a sublime saga illustrating basic and ideal human figures. (Kim Ji-Seok)
