Program Note
It′s circa 1920. Sixteen year-old Soonie marries into a family with a 10 year-old boy as her husband. Later the now grown-up husband comes back from his studies with his westernized girlfriend and sets up a family. Driven out of her married-life, Soonie lives alone at her parents′ deserted house. Soon after, she starts a family with a kind pottery dealer, but he′s unfortunately drowns. Soonie′s life once again gets a turning point when a woman and a baby on the verge of starvation come to her house. It′s quite hard to believe that the film′s director, Bae Chang-Ho, is the same person responsible for the box-office hit Deep Blue Night from 15 years ago. Comparing the star-ridden modern romance with America as its background that is Deep Blue Night with the somewhat out-dated identity crisis of My Heart, there seems to be too much of a gap between the two. However, that gap isn′t so wide when considering that his film from 15 years ago dealt with the problems of Korean illegal residents seeking identity, as Bae Chang-Ho throws the question of defining the essence of being Korean in an age of globalization with vanishing cultural boundaries. His temporary answer to this is ′love′ instead of ′hatred,′ as Soonie embraces every situation capable of harboring hatred and replaces it with her love. By doing so, she becomes a symbolic figure of the ′Korean mother.′ (Han Sang-Jun)
