Program Note
While travelling by ferry to the island of El Hierro, Maria loses her young son Diego. Has he fallen overboard? Has he been abducted? Nobody knows. Diego simple vanishes. Six months later... Maria is fighting to overcome the pain of her loss, to pick up the pieces and continue with her life, when she receives an unexpected call. A child’s body has been discovered; she must return to El Hierro. On the island, in this strange and threatening landscape, surrounded by sinister, malevolent characters, Maria is forced to confront her worst nightmares. As she travels the terrible path that will lead to her son, Maria will make the most unbearable discovery of all - some mysteries never meant to be revealed.
Director
Bae Yong-Kyun
Born in Taegu, 1951. While studying fine arts he worked as assistant director on student films. After graduating he went on take a doctorate and now teaches Fine Art in Taegu. The script for his debut film Why Has Bodhi-Dharma left for the East? was written in 1981, five years before he managed to start making the film, which won the Golden
Leopard at the 1989 Locarno Film Festival. His second film Black Soil, White People(1997) has had only limited screenings at home and abroad.
