The Actor of the Year is an award for emerging talents in independent Korean films from the Vision section, selected by a pair of renowned Korean actor and actress. Each winner is awarded a cash prize of KRW 5,000,000, sponsored by BIFF Supporters Association.
It is rare for an actor to judge a fellow actor’s performance. I have always known that if given such an opportunity, I would focus on an actor’s ‘professionalism.’ Beyond a fresh and pure image, a mysterious mask revered by critics, or the raw charm of untamed talent — what truly captivates the audience is an actor who opens themselves up to the storyline, absorbs the director’s guidance into their own performance, and who understands the exact distance with the camera. Such confidence instills deep trust in the audience and allows them to fully immerse themselves in the film. Won Hyangra’s performance in Beyond Love’s Horizon was, in the truest sense of the word, that of a professional actor. With my warmest applause, I proudly present her with the Actor of the Year Award.
Demonstrating a grounded presence far beyond that of an emerging talent, Kang Seung-ho skillfully leads the narrative. Kang’s natural dialogue delivery and understated emotional range are deeply impressive, conveying the character’s emotion effortlessly. Through subtle expressions and a gaze laden with nuanced layers of emotion, the actor brings profound depth to the role. Recognizing not only his exceptional performance in this film but also his extraordinary potential to expand across a wide spectrum of future cinema, the jury proudly selects Kang Seung-ho as the recipient.
